We Are Poets

UK 2011 / 80min.
Director/Producer Daniel Lucchesi, Alex Ramseyer-Bache.

Modern youths are often criticised for not being creative or driven. But perhaps what they need is to find something to inspire them in order to become inspiring themselves.

The UK will be represented by 6 teenagers at Brave New Voices: the most prestigious Poetry Slam competition in the world. From North England, to a stage in front of the White House in Washington DC, the young poets explosively lay bare the concerns of the multi-ethnic noughties generation, and prepare for a transformational journey of a lifetime.

Though poetry is often associated with the written word, it is an art form which derives from the spoken word. Poetry slams see poems go back to their roots. Even for those among us not into poetry or poetry slams, this film is about more than the art form itself. It outlines our drive to question politics, to peacefully protest and to change our history. The idea that art can be used to oppose political ideas and policies is not new, but to see teenagers use it in a modern form is inspirational.

Cinematic, imaginative and uniquely honest, this is a moving testament to the power of creativity, community and the dynamism of young people. Anyone tempted to dismiss today‘s youth as politically apathetic better pay heed — here is electrifying evidence to the contrary.
