“PROVOCATIVE SUBJECT MATTER.” -Alissa Simon, Variety
Asia Pacific Premiere
Israel/India/USA 2009 / 77min. / Hebrew, Hindi with English subtitles.
Director Zippi Brand Frank. Producers Zippi Brand Frank, Zvi Frank.
Director Brand-Frank takes you into a whole new level of outsourcing work with Google Baby. Perhaps your age creates pregnancy risks or you are infertile? Or you are gay and seeking
the opportunity to start a family. Fret no more, there’s a womb for hire.
Welcome to the brave new world of outsourcing birth.
But what of the moral and ethical questions? Who is the parent of a child when the sperm comes from Israel, the egg comes from the United States and the surrogate pregnancy takes place in Gujarat, India?
In Israel, legalities make it hard to use surrogate mothers. It’s expensive in the United States whereas in India, it’s affordable, but Western clients want white babies. The film travels to three continents, following Doron, an entrepreneur taking globalized business to a new level.
Google Baby skillfully humanizes the people involved at every step of the pregnancy. Everyone involved has strong motivations:
couples yearning for a child, American women undergoing gruelling fertility treatments and impoverished Indian women who carry the child only to have the baby taken away at birth.
As shocking as it seems, this maybe the birth of a movement.
