“ESSENTIAL PORTRAIT OF AN URBAN COMMUNITY.”
Asia Pacific Premiere
The Club
Spain 2009 / 67min. / Catalan, Spanish with English subtitles.
Director Rose Kowalski. Producer Madeleine Sheahan.
In a spectacular setting overlooking the beach, port and city of Barcelona, suntanned grannies, world-class athletes and the body-beautiful converge in their search for happiness and
wellbeing.
This is a choral piece whose narratives of main characters intertwine and play out over the course of a year. Maria Borrella (age 12) aspires to become an Olympic swimmer. Sonia Montes
(33) is body-building for the world Bodyfitness finals. Fellow gym-user Marco (32) introduces to the mating rituals of young gay men at the club. Joan Sagarra (80) recounts the desolation
of retirement. The banter of a group of elderly men and women reflects the developing narrative.
Sensually and beautifully shot, Director Kowalski’s observational portrait follows the freshness of childhood, the trials of
adolescence, the loves and ambitions of young adulthood, the crises of middle age, the loneliness and liberation of old-age.
Rich with details and poignancy, the story takes us into the inner sanctum of the private club and its members.
By the way, the pool looks very inviting.
