“MY KAYAK’S SINKING...I FELL OFF IN THE SEA, AND I’M GOING DOWN...” -Andrew McAuley’s last words
New Zealand Premiere
Australia 2009 / 58min.
Director/Producer Jennifer Peedom.
On January 11, 2007, Andrew McAuley set out on his quest to become the first person to kayak from Australia to New Zealand.
McAuley’s trip over 1600km of dangerous ocean was expected to take between 30 and 40 days. He slept using a self-designed capsule cover which would seal the kayak over so that the air
and buoyancy inside the capsule would prevent the boat from staying upside down should it be rolled over during the night.
He endured sores, sleepless nights and exhaustion. Five metre Great White sharks would tail his boat and, 21 days into his voyage, he was trapped inside his kayak capsule as he endured 12 metre waves in 80 knot winds, 600km from land, and all alone.
Miraculously after surviving the Force 9 storm, he was one day short of completing the journey when New Zealand maritime authorities received the dreaded distress call. His body was
never recovered.
This moving and questioning portrait of a complex man is told by his wife Vicki, his friends and crew. Made the more harrowing
by McAuley‘s video confessions recorded at sea, Solo is an incredible tale of adventure tragedy that questions the extreme risk that adventurers are driven to pursue.
