The Belgrade Phantom

Asia Pacific Premiere

Berogradski Fantom
Serbia/Hungary/Bulgaria 2009 / 80min. / Serbo-Croatian with English subtitles.
Director Jovan Todorovic. Producers Bogdan Petkovic, Jovan B. Todorovic.

A mysterious young man has stolen a white Porsche Targa 911s. He announces his escapades on a popular radio show. The thief publicly challenges the police into acat-and-mouse game on his terms, leading to spectacular car chases around the city of Belgrade. It is August 1979 and President Tito of Serbia is out of the country, attending The Non-Aligned Nations World Summit in Cuba.

Over 10,000 people are on the streets nightly supporting the rebel without a cause, the Yugoslavian James Dean. The police are desperate to catch him. Tito demands that the spectacle be cleaned up before it becomes a major embarrassment for him.
The Phantom has become a rogue symbol that threatens the
system.

The Belgrade Phantom reconstructs the events using archive footage, interviews, dramatized sequences with a stellar soundtrack. In the final credits, we hear the voice of the actual Belgrade Phantom from old cassette recordings. If you enjoyed the Fast & Furious films, this stylish noir-based adrenaline packed film. With spectacular car chases, the film has become
one of Serbia’s most successful films of this decade. A cinematic experience not to be missed.

What started as a game turned into a political scandal and a legend that will never be forgotten.
